Thursday, June 29, 1995When we awoke early in the morning the ship had already docked in Skagway. Rob and I hustled off the ship to our kayaking adventure. We were excessively outfitted in kayaking garb, given brief lessons and sent out in our two-person sea kayak. Our guide took the group around the inlet. We saw several glaciers, Bald Eagles, and a Blue Heron. The water was very calm and made kayaking a joy.We returned from our early morning adventure to shower and eat breakfast. After playing some shuffleboard, cards and eating lunch we set out to explore Skagway. Much of the town has been restored to its early 20th century gold rush look. We went on a long walk looking for Soapy Smith's grave. Soapy was a notorious gangster during the gold rush era and was killed in a gunfight with the law. He was buried just outside the local cemetery. His main legacy seems to be to the tourist industry. We found plenty of signs to the grave, but didn't actually find the grave itself. Returning to the ship we had an afternoon snack of cookies and ice cream. Then I spent some time exercising and sitting in the jacuzzi. Since it was a formal evening I put on my tuxedo. Since I was wearing my tuxedo I had to head to the casino. After an hour of blackjack I was ahead $20. I spent the rest of the cruise giving back that $20 and ended up $4 ahead for the trip. Not bad, but not comparable to the $100+ that I won on my last cruise. The captain's reception was held that evening and we went from there to eat dinner. After dinner we saw the show, and -- believe it or not -- retired for the evening without visiting the midnight buffet. Animals seen:
