Fish, Glass, and Hypothermia

We had an eventful weekend. Here's a rundown (long).

Saturday, June 19

This morning I took Foxy to the vet to get her booster shots. She doesn't like the vet (what dog does?), but she did not "express her anal glands" this time. Just a little pee and a lot of shedding.

After that, we loaded the twins in the car and took them to the Downtown Aquarium with the free tickets as part of the annual family event at work. They liked the aquarium OK, but they're a little young yet to get much out of it. Amanda enjoyed looking at the sharks in the shark tank. We then went to the Angelika Cafe for the second part of the work-sponsored family event (although everyone else did the aquarium after lunch). The cafe had no highchairs, so the twins sat in our laps as they ate. Eating our lunch was slow going, since we had to chase down the girls at the same time. Thankfully, we had the place pretty much to ourselves, so at least they weren't bothering any other patrons.

Sunday, July 20

This was the twin's 18-month birthday. We didn't celebrate, but we verbally acknowledged the day. That seemed like enough.

In the morning, I cut the grass, a chore I really hate. It was made worse when I accidentally shattered a glass Coke bottle in the garage while getting a garbage bag to sweep the cuttings into. I had to spend the next 20 minutes carefully sweeping up the shards of glass, which on the surface doesn't sound bad, but this is after I did the yard work and was not happy to still be outside in the hot weather. A cool shower helped my mood immensely.

I spent the afternoon helping my wife's old church get FrontPage working so they can edit their web page. I originally designed the web page for them, but it has fallen into disrepair since. After that meeting, I ran some errands: got Donna's birthday presents and got some light bulbs at the hardware store. Purchasing lightbulbs is not normally blog-worthy, but it's what I did with them when I got them home...

I had gotten a flourescent floodlight for the security light over the garage. Upon screwing it in, I tried to redirect the aim of the fixture, when I snapped the plastic arm holding the lightbulb. The sudden jerk actually caused the newly-installed lightbulb to shatter (it must have hit something on the fixture), which sent shards of glass onto the driveway. Sound familiar? But wait, there's more! After I sweep up these pieces of glass, I go to remove the broken part of the lightbulb. Just as it is coming out of the socket, it slips out of my pliers' grip and falls to the driveway, shattering once again. I find myself sweeping up shards of glass for the third time that day, after which I am still out one floodlight and now I have to replace the entire fixture. At least the other lightbulb I got had no problems and is now happily warming and lighting our lava lamp.

Sunday night, Amanda woke up crying at 11:00 pm, very unusual for either of the twins. She was cool, and taking her temperature showed it was below 97! We called the nurse hotline to make sure this wasn't something dangerous (it wasn't), but she was not comfortable in bed. We tried putting her back in her crib several times (after warming her up and reading to her), but each time she started crying a short time later. It wasn't until 2:30 am that she finally went to sleep for the night. Since I had to work the next day, Donna stayed up with her after midnight. So she is extra sleepy today, and I am just moderately sleepy. We still have no idea what (if anything) is wrong with Amanda.

To top off the weekend, I have a mild sore throat. As of Monday morning, it's not much more than annoying, but I'd really rather it didn't get any worse.
