Reading Harry Potter

I stayed up late last night to finish the most recent Harry Potter book: The Half-Blood Prince. I hadn't intended to stay up until I finished it, at around 12:30 AM, but I did. I had dabbled in the book starting yesterday morning, but I pretty much read straight through starting at 8:00 PM. I think it was more of a cliffhanger than any of the other previous books, and as such I'm very eager to see the resolution in the final book when it comes out (2008?).

It's funny how we came to get the book though.

We had previously decided not to get the book yet because Donna had too many things to do for her work in the evenings, and she couldn't afford to get trapped reading the book for hours on end. We planned on buying at from Amazon in a few weeks when she had more time. I was eager to read the book, but I could wait that long for it.

My Dad and Stepmom are in town visiting from Florida, so we took advantage of their presence by going to see a movie after the girls went to sleep. Donna and I picked out War of the Worlds. To our surprise, the 8:45 Saturday night showing was sold out! Rather than stay out excessively late or just turn around and go back home, we found a nearby Barnes & Noble store to browse around in.

We did not kid ourselves - we were going to buy the Harry Potter book if it was there, but I could not find a copy of the book anywhere in the store, except in the clutches of another shopper's hands. After an hour of browsing through the bookstore, we saw the set of books behind the counter. The most unenthusiastic cashier ever told us the were unreserved. We bought one.

Donna, to her credit, read only the first 5 chapters that evening. She got a chance to read 2 more chapters before I pounced on it and wouldn't let it go, which meant I didn't get to sleep until after 1:00 AM (the ending of the book had me all riled up, so I didn't go right to sleep).

So I'm a little sleep-deprived today because of a movie I didn't see Saturday. My life is a Rube Goldberg.
