A17: USS Arizona Memorial

A22: Casualties of the USS Arizona
Oops! Mom and Rebecca found out that the Polynesian Cultural Center is closed on Sundays, so they made alternate plans for us to go to the USS Arizona Memorial in the early morning. The timing was fine for Donna and me, since we were still adjusting to Hawaii time (the alarm was set for 6:00 am, but we were up at 5:00 am).

The bus arrived a little later than the 6:45 am schedule, but "Cousin Roland" did get there. He gave us narration and helpful hints about the USS Arizona memorial. We arrived and had a quick guided tour around the small museum before he left us "pretty cousins" at the interpretive movie which progresses to the memorial.

The battle at Pearl Harbor is an interesting story, since several oversights and mistakes made the surprise Sunday morning attack all that more potent. The memorial is built over the remains of the Arizona in the harbor, and the 1,100+ sailors that died on it were left entombed in the ship. It was a very sober and reflective morning, but the decision to go early certainly made a difference! The crowds when we left were almost suffocating!

Coming back to Outrigger Waikiki, we went across the street to the "International Food Court" for some Korean and Vietnamese food. We then spent a short time in the ocean - just long enough for me to drown one of our walkie-talkies.

For dinner, we ate at a nice table at Duke's, where we watched people enjoy the live entertainment while enjoying a nice meal. (Donna had some wonderfully tender Opakapaka fish, cooked "Duke" style). Now we are getting ready to pack up for our trip to Kauai...
