We all crowded on a full Aloha Airlines flight to take us to Hilo by way of Honolulu. We had an unusually long layover in Oahu, but other than that the flight was uneventful. We got to see the islands of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui from the air before we landed. We got our luggage and rental car (a red Alero, just like in Kauai!) and then stopped at the first restaurant we saw: Pizza Hut. Feeling better after eating, we made our way to Volcano, Hawaii. We went to Jade street (off route 11) and 6th street, but we couldn't find Carsons Volcano Cottages. We had to call them from the cell phone to find out it was further down 6th street. I checked in and got directions to our Koa cottage, about 1/2 mile away on a secluded lot. Small, but cute! I tried out the hot tub right away before settling in the rest of the way. We all read for a while before going to the Kilauea Lodge in Volcano to a very nice dinner. We returned to the cottage and tried to build a fire in the fireplace, which we did, but no one knew how to keep the smoke from coming into the room, so we shut the fireplace up and aired the rooms out.
