J36: Lava from Pu'u O'o Entering the Ocean Day 11
July 18, 2000
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

From a hovering helicopter, this was the view we had of the lava from the Pu'u O'o vent pouring into the Pacific Ocean. It had coursed through lava tube under the solidified lava from the vent itself, a ways inland from the shore. Black sand is being made here as the lava explodes into tiny fragments as it hits the water.
