This picture is from inside an extinct lava tube. Just 200 years ago, lava coursed through this tube from the Kilaeua cauldron towards the sea. Now it is in a cool rain forest; in fact, the roots of many plants can be seen dangling from the roof of the tube, now called Thurston Lava Tube.
