Bathroom Break at the Zoo

I love taking the twins to the Children's Zoo section of the Houston Zoo. There are no boards at stroller-eye level so they can see all the animals, and they love petting the goats and sheep in the petting zoo.

But this past weekend I took the twins to the zoo by myself to give Donna some quiet time at home. I discovered that the bathroom facilities had several minor problems, in contrast to the well-designed and friendly Children's zoo area.

First off, there is only one bathroom in the children's zoo that has a sign to indicate it has a changing table. The regular women's and men's bathroom had no sign, and since I had two toddlers by myself, I couldn't do much investigating (the double stroller wouldn't have fit in the regular men's bathroom door anyway). So I had to wait even though it was not very busy.

The second problem is that the sign shows a woman with a child. I understood that to mean that women or men could use it, but since it was adjacent to the women's bathroom, I thought it was possble that it was meant only for women. Maybe it was actually part of the women's bathroom! When the mother and her daughter came out of the restroom, though, I saw that it was self-enclosed.

Once inside, it was not very spacious. This is understandable. There was at least enough room for Amanda to hang out in the stroller while I tended to Elena. But the changing table was right next to the hand drying machine, and since Elena's feet hung off the end of the table, the hand dryer would activate. This would have been handy if her socks were wet, but they weren't, so it was mostly just annoying.

All-in-all, I did emerge from the bathroom with a freshly-diapered toddler, so I suppose the facilities were adequate. But adequate is the highest praise I can give them.
