Being Competent

Yesterday was a busy day, but in an unexpected way. We had a big list of activites to accomplish. I wanted to paint the final part of our bedroom and cut the grass. Donna helped me by taking the girls on several errands, including stopping at the bank, post office, grocery store, Office Depot, a teacher supply store, and a grocery store.

Cold Showers

Our water heater is old. It showed its age yesterday when it broke. I'm still not sure how it broke, but it couldn't be a coincidence that it happened after a gas utility worker came by to investigate a strange smell.

National Linkage

My wife's blog is now linked from a national organization's web site: National School Reform Faculty.

This was pretty exciting for her, since it might get her blog some attention beyond the people she works with or has explicitly told them about. At least it's a recognition from the people who run the NSRF website that her blog has value and is relevant to the activities NSRF is involved in. I don't really think it will noticeably affect her page hits or "Google rank", but we'll see.

Movies

I actually saw two movies in a 5-day period this past week.

The first was March of the Penguins, and it was the first movie we took the girls to go see (they have been to other movies, but they are of the kind for mothers where the infants are supposed to sleep through). I enjoyed it, and Elena watched it for the most part - the times that she didn't she practiced getting out of her seat. She stayed quite the whole time, though. Amanda stayed quiet, too, but that's because she slept through the second half of it on my lap.

The second was War of the Worlds. It was actually a good movie, but the first 3 minutes of it soured it for me...

Spoilers in the extended entry...

Send First, Proofread Second

I have developed a bad habit of not checking my emails at work very closely before hitting the "send" button. I get away with this because the spell-check process then kicks-in, and I almost always have some typo, acronym, or some random piece of data that is flagged as a misspelling. This gives me a second chance to review the email, and correct things like using "simple" instead of "simply", "of" instead of "if", and the like.

If the next version of Lotus Notes I use has live spell-check (with those red underlines) instead of a separate spell-check process, I'll have to change my habits or lower the standards of my outgoing emails.

Bye Bye Milk?

I am going off dairy products for a week. I drink more milk than anyone I know, so it will definitely be a change for me. I'm drinking vanilla soy milk instead - it's not bad, actually.

I've been having some chronic GI symptoms for quite a while, and they haven't gone away. I thought they might be lingering affects from my stomach bug I got during my last (and only) trip to India, but a year and a half seems too long for that. So I thought maybe I'm developing lactose-intolerance.

I have mixed emotions about this experiment. On the one hand, I'm very excited at the prospect of being able to rid myself of my GI symptoms for good. On the other, I really like dairy products, so I won't enjoy the prospect of giving them up. We'll see how this week goes.
