On the first Friday of every month, the main Accenture office building where I used to work has a "breakfast social". I have never gone to this because it would take time away from my work at my client, since I'm rarely ever at that office (it's not even my "official" home office location anymore). But today, I thought I would stop by for breakfast which would accomplish two additional tasks:
1) Update my Accenture laptop while connected to the network
I generally only use my Accenture laptop to enter my time twice a month, and for that I don't need to be logged into the network. But any software updates are transmitted via a special piece of software that can only access the updates if I am connected to the Accenture network. So like to go visit an Accenture office at least once a quarter so my laptop doesn't get too far out of date.
2) Network with other Accenture people
Since my role at my current client is ending at the end of this month, I need to find my next one. I'm getting some assistance from my "career counselor", and I can browse the open roles on the internal Accenture job postings database, but every role I have had at Accenture since I've been hired has been through my personal contacts with senior executives. I'm not good at networking, and particularly when the point is so blatantly that I'm needing my next role, so I thought this breakfast would be a good way to help me with this.
I got to the office nice and early (7:15), connected to the network, and started the upgrade process. At 7:50, I went up to check on breakfast. No breakfast, and no group of people waiting for breakfast. Hm. I tried again at 8:00 (15 minutes after it was supposed to start) and still there was no breakfast and no people. I asked the receptionist, and she said she thought there was supposed to be a breakfast, but that the woman who usually brings the food wasn't in yet. So after my laptop got all its patches installed, I went up again at 8:20. No breakfast. No group of people.
By this time, I was pretty hungry. I left the office, and stopped by a donut shop to pick up 6 kolaches. I ate 2 and offered the rest to people at my client site.
So not only did I pay for breakfast, but I didn't get a chance to let some other key executives know that I was available for a new role. My laptop did get its updates though. Yea.
